How it works

  1. You set up an alert with your criteria: Minimum number of people, the dates you want to depart, and the route.

  2. Great Walks Booking monitors Department of Conservation's booking system 24/7 looking for cancellations.

  3. You receive an email from us as soon as something matching your criteria becomes available.

  4. You have to complete the booking yourself through DOC's online booking system.

... But does it really work?

Absolutely! Let's look at some live numbers:

  • went live November 10 2020, and now has 261 booking alerts of which 131 already have resulted in available bookings.

  • On average, it takes us 454.4 hours to find an available booking for you.

  • In the past 24 hours we checked for available bookings 504 times.

Tips to increase your chances of securing a booking

There are a few things you can do to greatly increase your chances of finding an open spot:

  • Select as few people as possible or split up into multiple groups. Your chances of finding an open booking drops exponentially the more people you are.

  • Select as many departure dates as possible.

  • Create multiple routes. Most tracks can be done in either direction, and in many cases you have both a hut and a campsite to choose from.

  • Make sure you received the confirmation email from us, and consider adding us to your contact list.

  • Create an account in DOC's booking system ahead of time and know the full name, age, and country of citizenship of all participants in the group.
